September 2012 NYC 10th Anniversary trip

Over Labor Day weekend Jarod surprised me with an anniversary trip to NYC.  I had no idea where we were going until we got to the gate.  He even convinced the ticket agent not to say our destination out loud as to keep the surprise going.  It was such a whirlwind trip.  We did as much as we could in the few days we were there.  Our flight was a red-eye that left LAX around midnight, and arrived in NYC at 6 am.  Our hotel room wouldn't be available to us until the afternoon, so we checked our bags, and headed out to see the city.

First we headed over to Radio City to see if we could get tickets to see Jimmy Fallon.  The only show available that day was Dr.  Phil.  We decided to pass.  We ate breakfast at a restaurant inside Rockefeller Center.  The NY bagel I got was awesome!
On our way to the subway we stopped in Time Square.

We hopped on the Subway and then got on a Ferry to take a tour of the Statue of Liberty.

Brooklyn Bridge

Instead of taking the free ferry ride that goes past the statue, we went to the island and took and audio tour.
Ellis Island was really neat.  They had great displays, and had we not been totally exhausted and jet-lagged, we might've stayed longer.  As is was, we headed back towards the hotel.
We stopped for a tour of the 9/11 memorial.  It wasn't quite complete, but it was still very impressive, and the reverence there was tangible.

After taking a nap at the hotel, we headed out to dinner.  We went up the street from our hotel to this great Italian place.  The food was incredible, and I was surprised that it didn't cost an arm and a leg.

It's true that they city never sleeps.  There were people everywhere late into the night.
The next day we headed to China town.  I got some fun purses, scarves, and a pearl necklace.  Jarod got a fake Rolex.  Getting the watch was quite the experience.  They had to take him into a backroom down a flight of stairs.  They made it all seem quite shady.
Jarod liked Little Italy.  Next time we go, we plan to spend more time there.
We hopped on the subway and headed all the way out to Coney Island. It was a blast!

We ate at Nathan's for a famous hotdog.

On the way back into the city, we stopped at Rockefeller Center.
That night Jarod took me to see Phantom of the Opera.  We both LOVED it!  Our seats were dead center on the third row.  When the chandelier came crashing down, it flew right over us.  I could feel my hair move as it passed.  When we got home I couldn't stop listening to the music.

We caught a few minutes of Mass on Sunday.

We went to the MOMA and spent a lot of time trying to find exhibits that didn't freak us out.  We finally found a few.  Next time we'll skip the wigs on tomato cages at the Modern 'Art' museum, and head for the classic art.

Grand Central Station was incredible.

We raced all over the city trying to see everything we could.  I literally had Jarod running during parts of the day, I was so anxious to fit more in.

We got to Grant's Tomb right before closing.
We rented bikes and rode, or rather raced through Central Park.  Jarod thought I was crazy to take pictures while riding.  It was such a fast and fun day.
On our last night we went in search of the Manhattan Temple.  We didn't really know which direction it was in, but when we came out of the subway, there it was!
I am lucky to be married to such a great guy.  He pulled out all the stops to celebrate being married for a decade.
